First Basic Lessons On Cabinets You Need To Know

Talking about cabinets, people usually define this as box-shaped furniture that is made for storing their belongings. Actually, early cabinets were especially created for storing papers or other valuables.

However, cabinets today are not only for storing papers but also other things. There are a lot of modifications and changes that were made to this furniture to make it more usable for humans. Now we have kitchen cabinets, TV cabinets, computer cabinets, gun cabinets, clothes cabinets, and etc.

Most cabinets are made of wood and some may be made of other modern materials like steel or plastic. Cabinets can either be attached to the wall or simply be standing alone. Cabinets are very beneficial in homes but the very basic advantage of this furniture is its capacity to store items, thus helping to give orderly appeal in the house.

With a lot of benefits and advantages of cabinets, this can now be classified based on its construction, finish materials, or wood materials used to build it.

Cabinets are classified depending on its construction types. There are four construction types of cabinets: RTA (ready to assemble), Stock, semi-custom or built-to-order, and custom. RTA, sometimes referred as KD or knock down or flat pack, is different among other types because the buyer will be the one to assemble the cabinet. This gives the person the opportunity to create his/her own design and modifications without actually having to carve the wood. The only downside to this cabinet type is its limitation in available colors and sizes. Stock cabinets, on the other hand, are made with standards in size, colors, and door styles. This type is inventoried before selling and is usually available within two days. Stock cabinets are considered the cheapest-priced fully built cabinets.

Meanwhile, semi-custom or built-to-order cabinets are manufactured with more choices in sizes, styles, and finishes. This type also allows optional modification for the cabinet's look and buyers are also given the option to request installation of some accessories. The custom cabinets are asked-to-be-built cabinets with specific measurements and design. This type is beneficial for buyers who want to have a custom size and type of cabinet. However, this type requires a longer time to be built.

Cabinets can also be found in different finishes. Early cabinets had simply unpainted finishes that are needed to be waxed for the wood's protection from dirt or stain. Today, cabinets can be found in different finish types. This are conversion varnish that is sometimes done with heat catalyzed to add strength, high-solid sealers that provides protection for the wood, hand-rubbed stains that has toners to give a desirable blend of wood stains, and ultra violet inhibitors that is specially made to protect the cabinet from over sun exposure and other damaging lights.

Because most cabinets are made of wood, there are different wood species that are used to construct cabinets. In United States, the most popular and commonly used are Oak, Pine, Maple, Hickory, Cherry, Poplar, Birch, and Alder. The heaviest and hardest wood species are Oak and Hickory. Birch, Maple, and Cherry, these are all good hard woods that are suited for cabinets.

Poplar and Alder are cheaper and more widely available wood species. Pine woods are used mainly because of its rusty look and can take lots of stain types, like the Poplar and Alder. However, Pines are soft wood that is easily scratched or dented even with the highest quality finishes. But because of its antique look, Pines are also commonly used for cabinets.

So if you are planning to buy a new cabinet, you can choose the best necessary cabinet for your home depending on its construction, finishes, and wood materials.
